It all depends on the composition! Hardening salts for optimum water quality

Dwarf shrimp are not easy to keep in an aquarium with tap water. The water straight from the tap is often too hard, and now and then it may also be contaminated with substances such as nitrate, copper or chlorine, which can lead to moulting problems or poisoning and are therefore quite problematic.

It is certainly easier and more shrimp-safe to use osmosis water or water from the deionizer when the values from the tap are completely incompatible and bring it to the desired values using appropriate mineral salts. You need to take a close look at the shrimp species you care for - depending on the shrimp you will need different mineral salts!

But don't worry, it's not as complicated as it sounds to prepare your water for your shrimp. Here in our shop you can buy the right salt online: either a salt which only increases total hardness, i.e. the GH, and which is optimally composed for bee shrimp (Caridina logemanni) and the beautiful Taiwan shrimp, also called Shadow Shrimp. They need water with a very low carbonate hardness and a GH of 6-10 °dH, which you can achieve by using a so-called bee salt such as the Bee Shrimp Mineral GH+ from SaltyShrimp, from Shrimp King or the GH up from Borneo Wild. There are also such salts available for soft water fish like discus. In our online shop you will find soft water mineral salts with a very low carbonate hardness from Preis Aquaristik, SaltyShrimp and Drak Aquaristik. The sodium-free Seachem Equilibrium is also ideal for plant aquariums with aquarium plants that prefer soft water.

Mineral salts, which increase the total hardness and the carbonate hardness, are used with shrimp of the genus Neocaridina. Although they are not very sensitive to water hardness, other substances such as nitrate, copper, chlorine or silver can also occur in tap water, which can quickly become problematic for Neocaridina dwarf shrimp. In case of unsuitable tap water for a shrimp aquarium with the comparatively more robust Neocaridina it is therefore recommended to use a mineral salt like the GH/KH+ from SaltyShrimp, Dennerle Shrimp King or Drak, which increases both, carbonate and total hardness.

There is also a suitable salt available for increasing the KH alone and at the same time stabilizing the pH value - just like your aquarium fish need it.

There are also suitable mineral salts available for the inhabitants of special habitats like Sulawesi shrimp or cichlids from Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika with which you can produce exactly the water that these beautiful shrimp and aquarium fish need. For these purposes, we also carry the suitable products by Salty Shrimp and Preis Aquaristik.
