Terrarium plants - Marsh plants - Green up your terrarium!

Wet and flooded soil often contains hardly any oxygen, but the plant roots need this for their respiration, otherwise they die. That is why many land plants die in soil that is too wet. Typical swamp and water plants are adjusted to this because they have an air channel system (aerenchyma) that conducts oxygen right into the roots.

Most aquarium plants that grow both emersed and submerged can be counted as swamp plants, and you can use them in the emersed form in paludariums and aquaterrariums. There are also many swamp plants that cannot be kept under water, such as the umbrella papyrus (Cyperus alternifolius) or the sessile joyweed (Alternanthera sessilis).
