Description
Anubias barteri is a very variable species, and one of the varieties is the bare spear leaf, Anubias barteri var. glabra. It is native to West Africa and occurs on rocks in the flood zone of rainforest streams. There are various forms of the glabra variety, including the plant that has long been on the market as Anubias minima. This has dark green, narrow-lanceolate, rather horizontal leaves with wavy edges. It grows to a height of around 10 - 15 cm. The ovate-lanceolate leaf blades are at least 12 cm long and 3.6 cm wide. The plant is also commercially available as Anubias "Kruising".
Anubias barteri var. nana "Minima" is just as undemanding and robust as other A. barteri forms. It is primarily a perching plant that attaches itself with its roots to the hardscape (rock, driftwood), but can also be attached to the substrate (but do not bury the rhizome!). Temperatures between around 22 and 26 °C are ideal. The plant needs little light, but develops better with moderate lighting. It has no particular requirements in terms of water chemistry, but develops best with a complete supply of nutrients via the water column. The addition of CO2 is also very beneficial to its growth, but is not absolutely necessary. Propagation takes place by dividing the rhizome.
Anubias barteri var. glabra "Minima" is a medium-sized plant that looks very decorative on the hardscape with its spreading growth and narrow, dark green leaves. Together with other perching plants such as the African Congo fern (Bolbitis heudelotii) and mosses, it can be used to create wonderful arrangements inspired by tropical jungle streams, even in low-light aquariums.
Anubias barteri var. glabra is widely spread in West Africa, from Guinea to Gabun. The plant forms dense populations on river banks and rocks in and on forest rivulets, where they often share the same habitat with Bolbitis heudelotii and Crinum natans.
The variety glabra really is a collective term for various Anubias barteri forms that grow to different sizes, their leaves oval to lanceolate. They cannot always be clearly discerned from other varieties of the species. A. barteri var. angustifolia with its longish leaf blades, e.g., looks rather similar.
Relatively small A. barteri var. glabra plants have been imported from Cameroun under the synonym Anubias minima, they are still carried under that name in trade.

Anubias not really common.
Strong plant received, very good quality.
Nice shape and interesting spring green in an aquarium. Really recommended, easy plant.
