Description
Eriocaulon sp. "Feather Duster" is an unusual plant of unknown origin. We suspect that it comes from the Indian subcontinent. It looks similar to Eriocaulon sp. ‘Japan Needle Leaf’, but has a much finer structure; the plant forms narrower leaves, only approx. 1 mm wide, which are not arranged in two rows but spirally on the rhizome. The rhizome branches out, forming a dense cluster of many individual shoots over time. The fine, flexible leaves are just over 30 cm long. If the plant grows in shallow water, relatively large head-shaped inflorescences with countless small grey-white flowers can push themselves above the surface of the water. The leaves remain submerged. Unlike "Japan Needle Leaf", "Feather Duster" does not form adhesive roots on hard materials and therefore cannot grow as a perching plant.
In our experience to date, Eriocaulon sp. "Feather Duster" has the same, fairly low cultivation requirements as Eriocaulon sp. "Japan Needle Leaf". The species grows well in medium to strong light. A nutrient-rich substrate or substrate fertiliser is not necessary, macro and micronutrient supply via the water column is sufficient. The addition of CO2 is very beneficial for growth, but not absolutely necessary. Older plants can be propagated efficiently by dividing the clump and separating the shoots.
Like "Japan Needle Leaf", Eriocaulon sp. "Feather Duster" is an interesting alternative to narrow-leaved background plants such as Vallisneria gracilis ("V. nana"). With its even finer, hair-like foliage, the plant offers the possibility of enhancing perspective effects in an aquascape in combination with "Japan Needle Leaf". This Eriocaulon gives a naturalistic impression when its leaves move in the current. If it grows close to the surface of the water, you can also expect to see its eye-catching head-like inflorescences above the water.
